Fire planning
Culp Valley Primitive Campground is an undeveloped backcountry camp area in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Backcountry. A reservation and mapped camp never imply that a fire is allowed. Follow posted stove, fire-ring, red-flag, and emergency restrictions. Ground fires are not authorized; use a park-provided fire facility only when the selected camp has one and the park has not suspended fires.
Portable gas stove in the assigned camp when park rules allow. Use a self-contained portable gas stove only in the portion of the assigned camp approved by California State Parks. Extreme-fire-danger and red-flag restrictions can suspend stove use.
The required backcountry reservation or permit does not itself grant fire permission. California State Parks does not identify a separate California Campfire Permit for an approved portable stove inside these park camps.
Check the current Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Backcountry notice and the assigned camp posting before using any flame; State Parks may prohibit wood, charcoal, or every flame device without changing the reservation.
Seasonal access
No recurring date-based closure of Culp Valley Primitive Campground is published. The source-connected approach conditions below and temporary emergency orders still control access.
Source-connected approach: Palm Canyon Trailhead. Most Anza-Borrego backcountry access has no annual closure date, but summer heat can be life-threatening and floods can damage unpaved roads. Coyote Canyon is closed annually from June 1 through September 30.
Check State Parks notices, desert weather, road and wash conditions, water requirements, and any area-specific closure before departure.
