Backpacking camp
Lassen Volcanic National Park, California
Chaos Crags is an official itinerary area, permit zone, or source-backed named overnight reference represented by a reachable point on the pinned agency trail network in Lassen Volcanic National Park.
The marker is a route-access reference, not a tent pad. Move off the trail only where travel is permitted, remain inside the authorized zone, and choose a legal durable site under every current setback and closure.
Water planning
No official facility record or USGS lake, reservoir, river, or stream was verified within 0.5 mile of the mapped camp-area marker. Carry all water needed for the stay.
Do not plan to collect water at this camp area.
Not applicable—no source is reliable enough to use in the itinerary.
Fire planning
Campfires, charcoal, and wood-burning or biomass stoves are prohibited in Lassen's backcountry and wilderness.
Small gas or liquid-fuel stove allowed. Use only a small portable stove that burns gas or liquid fuel; biomass, wood, and charcoal devices are prohibited.
Lassen does not identify a separate California Campfire Permit for an allowed portable gas or liquid-fuel stove.
Emergency restrictions can be stricter; check Lassen conditions and fire notices before departure.
Seasonal access
No recurring date-based closure of Chaos Crags is published. The source-connected approach conditions below and temporary emergency orders still control access.
Source-connected approach: Manzanita Creek Trailhead. Snow normally closes the through park highway to vehicles from roughly November through April. Remote Butte Lake, Juniper Lake, and Warner Valley roads also become snowbound and are not equivalent to winter trailhead access.
Use Lassen's current road and oversnow reports. Closed vehicle roads can become winter ski or snowshoe routes, but summer mileage and services no longer apply.
