Fire planning
La Jolla Valley Hike-In Camp is an undeveloped backcountry camp area in Santa Monica Mountains. Campfires and smoking are prohibited at the supported hike-in camps; verify current stove restrictions before departure. Ground fires are not authorized; use a park-provided fire facility only when the selected camp has one and the park has not suspended fires.
Portable gas stove in the assigned camp when park rules allow. Use a self-contained portable gas stove only in the portion of the assigned camp approved by California State Parks. Extreme-fire-danger and red-flag restrictions can suspend stove use.
The required backcountry reservation or permit does not itself grant fire permission. California State Parks does not identify a separate California Campfire Permit for an approved portable stove inside these park camps.
Check the current Santa Monica Mountains notice and the assigned camp posting before using any flame; State Parks may prohibit wood, charcoal, or every flame device without changing the reservation.
Seasonal access
No recurring date-based closure of La Jolla Valley Hike-In Camp is published. The source-connected approach conditions below and temporary emergency orders still control access.
Source-connected approaches: Ray Miller Trailhead, Circle X Ranch Trailhead. The supported Backbone Trail camps do not share a recurring annual closure. Wildfire, extreme heat, storms, trail damage, and park operating restrictions can temporarily close a trailhead or camp; camping remains legal only at the designated reserved sites.
Check Santa Monica Mountains current conditions and the official Backbone Trail camping page before departure, including the status and reservation of the exact designated camp.
