Remote Gunbarrel road · wet-weather closure: Gunbarrel is the remote eastern end of the South Kelsey Trail. The Forest Service closes the access road during wet weather; verify the exact spur, gate, turnaround, vehicle clearance, and a two-vehicle or shuttle exit plan before relying on it. South Kelsey has no fixed annual trail closure, but the Forest Service closes Gunbarrel road during wet weather and warns that Eightmile Creek and the Smith River can become dangerous or impassable after storms. Snow can also block the Summit Valley end.
Check Six Rivers alerts, recent rain, river and creek levels, the Gunbarrel gate, and the exact vehicle approach before departure. Do not use the eastern end as an exit unless its road is confirmed open.
