Smith River National Recreation Area, Six Rivers National Forest, California
South Kelsey National Recreation Trailhead is a source-backed overnight access point in Siskiyou Wilderness / South Kelsey Trail. Kampilo publishes only the official trail geometry and permit or camp authorization options represented in the mapped catalog.
The mapped line is a planning reference rather than a guarantee of current access. Confirm road, parking, trail, weather, fire, permit, and closure conditions with the land manager before departure.
Seasonal access

South Kelsey western access: Use the signed South Kelsey National Recreation Trail entry in the Smith River corridor. Confirm the final Forest Service road, legal overnight parking, river level, Eightmile Creek crossing, and current Six Rivers closure orders before departure. South Kelsey has no fixed annual trail closure, but the Forest Service closes Gunbarrel road during wet weather and warns that Eightmile Creek and the Smith River can become dangerous or impassable after storms. Snow can also block the Summit Valley end.
Check Six Rivers alerts, recent rain, river and creek levels, the Gunbarrel gate, and the exact vehicle approach before departure. Do not use the eastern end as an exit unless its road is confirmed open.
